Sliced Gaming Feature: PS3 - One Year On

So it's been one year since the last console in this generation of systems hit Australian shelves. The Playstation 3 debuted with perhaps a bit of an anticlimax, but steady software updates and a growing library of good titles have kept the system afloat. It's set to have an impressive year in 2008 with many big titles on the horizon, and its victorious position as the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market can only help it gain momentum. Our staff - from those who have every system to those who are peering in at the market from the outside - weigh in on the PS3's first year.
ADAM SHUREY:
PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS
The PS3 for me is a success. After buying mine at launch, I haven't regretted it for a minute, despite the console initially being little more than a fancy Blu-Ray player. As the year went on, the PS3 really began to prove itself as a worthy competitor to the Xbox 360. Last year was only slightly disappointing, as some top exclusives were released. Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Folklore, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Resistance: Fall of Man and Lair were the majority of the heavy hitters, though many will disagree on that last one! 2008 looks to one-up last year considerably with a larger number of exclusives being released, some of which are very big name titles, such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy. Meanwhile, plenty of multiplatform titles are being released, and will continue to be released and while the PS3 didn't fare so well on this front last year, with some inferior ports being released, any issues seem to have been cleared up, with games like Devil May Cry 4 and Assassin's Creed working perfectly on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.
I also bought a Wii at launch, and while it's a good console and worthy successor to the Gamecube, I just wasn't completely satisfied. Thinking longingly of far off games like Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Galaxy, I decided that I needed a second console. The PS3 was an easy choice for me, after the incredible track record of the PS2, I had little doubt in my mind that the PS3 would follow in its footsteps. All I can say is, so far, so good. Nowadays my PS3 gets played almost as much as my Wii does (I've always been a bit of a Nintendo fan ) and I am loving it.
Some of the exclusive games PS3 owners can look forward to this year are: LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze, White Knight Chronicles, Gran Turismo 5, FFXIII, Naruto and Disgaea 3, with plenty more on the way, as well as Home. 2008 looks to be a great year for the PS3, as the console has gained a fair bit of momentum in the past year, and so far looks to keep pushing ahead more (continued next page)
