The other night Amityville Horror and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
I hate horror movies and Amityville had the worst storyline ever. A family and some dude and some little scary girl and an indian burial ground and an excorcist... was cut and paste and I tried to watch as little of it as possible by looking at my pillow :|
Holy Grail is always funny.

I saw 40 year old the other week... it's pretty slow and parts of it suck but there are standouts... the waxing scene and the end bit come to mind.

The 40 Year Virgin

Was in stitches basically the whole way through. The waxing scene is a classic. I cant believe he let himself get waxed for the movie. Will be a definately DVD purchase for me.

Lean On Me

A great 80s flick based on a true story. Morgan Freeman is perfect as Joe Clark the main character. Excellent storyline.

Batman Begins

One of my fav movies for the year after its cinema veiwing- it loses its effect dramatically on the small screen...it suffers from an almost terrible second half where stereo-typical goons fire at anything that moves and a stupid plot device (water vapouriser)...the first half is breath-taking and Bale is excellent...the fear effect also loses some spark...jury is out until another viewing..

Brotherhood Of The Wolf

Probably not everyones cup of tea, but still an interesting French film set in the 18th century. Cast includes Monica Bellucci.

i thought Brotherhood of the Wolf started off cool- but faded once we realised what the beast was and what it was being used for- it became a tad silly then...

Sadly, that's what happens to movies sometimes; who knows, maybe Monica Bellucci is the only good thing about. lol

Saw Howl's Moving Castle, man it was great.

Little bit of a soppy ending (it seems like she's only at howl's for a few days, but really it's combined after several weeks - and therefore ending seems a bit premature), but still great work of Studio Ghibli, like I expected. Not quite Spirited Away, but close.

4.5/5

Highly recommended.

Boyz n the Hood

Thought this was a great movie. Ice Cube was impressive, and although it would have been nice to see it when it was first released it still holds up quite well considering its age.

The Wizard

Just finished watching The Wizard. 80s movie about video games starring Fred Savage and Christian Slater. Basically a 100 minute add for Nintendo games. The movie is pretty good actually. Its a VHS released copied to DVD so at a high sound level you do hear a slight hum but turning the volume down elimates this. Its been about 12 years since I last saw this movie. Only arrived in the mail today.

Ong Bak: Muay Thai Fighter
Anyone into martial arts or thai boxing of any sort watch this - it is brutal... Starts off slow but by the end there are some cracked heads. BRUTAL. Anyone who has seen Thai Boxing before would recognise a fair bit of the films stuff, but it takes it a step further into a sort of freestyle version.

At the start it seems like many a foreign movie... kid from  the village sets off to the big town, gets chased by some gangs (some amazing stunts there too - not much fighting at the start, but he does some amazing acrobatic stuff), ends up in an illegal fighting club (fights an aussie there too, Big Bear)... and well eventually you get to the end scene which is amazing and brutal and cringeworthy all at the same time. The big metal pole he uses on the dudes heads... and the swords he doesnt actually cut anyone with... and then those wood blocks across the arm are just... well once again, brutal!
The climax fight is stunning, the breaking of the leg, the cracking of the dudes skull...

Not for people who are afraid of a little blood (not much, most of it is real though ), but yeah. Amazing... the motorcycle helmet bit... the flaming legs... Too cool.
Pure action too... no stunt doubles, no wirework, no cgi. Go hire it now and watch the uncut version (it comes with a french theatrical version which i haven't watched and the original uncut) and then watch the special features just to see how strong the real hits were..
Think an understudy stuntsman (guy who gets hit) got kicked in the head so hard he was knocked out cold for 5 hours and didn't remember the fight at all.

4.5/5!

saw nightwatch last ngiht - movie about good vs evil basically, and the eternal struggle between them. its based by a russian author named sergei lukyanenko and is the first in a trilogy. the movie is subbed in english (thank god no dubs). i thought it was really good and enjoyed it alot - a must for fantasy fans.

on a side note - anyone who knows of sergei lukyanenko's work - can you point me to a place where i can buy english translations of his novels? their are a few short stories of his translated online, but they just leave me hungry for more!

Miyazaki's Spirited Away after I bought the Studio Ghibli Collection edition this afternoon.
Absolutely brilliant anime film about a young girl named Chihiro that rediscovers the true meaning of herself as she is transported to a world where gods take baths at a damn huge bathhouse and it almost seems as though she'll never see her parents transformed back to their human bodies.
One of Miyazaki's finest films - up there with Nausicaa.
4.5/5

If you're interested in seeing Spirited Away for no cost - grab a television and switch it on to SBS at 10:00PM on Wednesday night for a screening (albeit English dubbed  ).

The other night I saw Shrek 2. And I came to the conclusion. Shrek 2 compared to Shrek 1 sux in the long run.
Donkey was so much funnier in the first one. And Shrek definitely was more enjoyable. The John Lithgow puts John Cleese to shame. The laughs were also there and the parodies weren't over done. In Shrek 2 you couldn't go through 5 minutes without a parody. They overdid it in Shrek 2. And I sat down and watched it, and I really couldn't bring myself to laugh. The only thing that did were Charming and the Fairy Godmother.

Other then that I checked out a great classic today.

The Usual Suspects. Well done. One of the best twists out there. Always good to watch again.

The Warriors

I thought Id actually watch the movie before my copy of the game arrives in the mail. For a 26 year old movie the storyline still feels fresh and could easily be re-made now without much change. The lighting effects are pretty good. The cartoony intervals are well drawn and help to further along the story.

its about 1 gang being setup or something and trying to get back across the city to their home turf with all the other city gangs out to get them isnt it?

the premise sounds pretty good - the 80's generally had some decent movies, much better than the drivel on show now huh i bet there WILL be a remake soon too, because of the game

I watched a Steven Segal movie with Ja Rule on TV the other day. I didn't think it was all that bad to be honest. I mean you never watch a Steven Segal movie to see anyone act but it wasn't bad.

Leon- THe Professional

The movie that launched Natalie Portman to the world- she delivers a stunning performance here for someone so young...awesome movie well worth checking out...some minor over-acting from Gary Oldman and a stellar performance from the always good Jean Reno- tale of a hitman who takes in a little girl after her whole family is murdered...

Great movie, I've seen it a few times but I've only ever known it as The Professional. Maybe Gary Oldman over- acts due to the nature of his character, who knows. lol

Kiss of Death

Not a bad movie starring David Carruso, Samuel J Jackson and Nicholas Cage. Action flick, so lots of fighting etc, it is gory in parts so younger viewers are warned against seeing it.
