I mean, if you follow Sony and Microsoft's ideas, the Playbox should be a great name. But it's not. It sucks. It's only because of mass exposure that we've all become used to 'Playstation' and 'Xbox'.

No trademarks have been registered at the us patent office, though due to delays in registering, we could only find out by 5/5/06 or even 9/5/06. Sounds suspiciously close to E3, don't you think?

hey guys,
I havnt posted for months but being the nintendo fan and in this uproar all over the world i thought i should intervene...

Now think about it...its just a name! i dont know why the world is kickin up such a fuss over a name...
This name has not changed anything that they were offering before...the only reason its such a fuss is because everyone is expecting too much from them.
I mean cmon....PLAYSTATION, XBOX, MICROSOFT, GOOGLE, MEGADRIVE, MASTERSYSTEM...THERE ALL SHOCKIN NAMES when u look deep into them...but its just due to the time weve all had to adjust that they mean nuthing to us, but when u really look into them...u think...wow...there lame.
I dont disagree that Wii isnt lame...but its here to stay...and i know alot of people who would buy this console if it was named shitheap or "dont buy this console".
Least theyve tried...this is like the first game console name with a meaning that i can remember...
Once all the freakin forumgeeks chill on like gamefaqs and stuff...the outrage will die down, most of my mates who ive told have been like "oh yer, its pretty wierd, but ill still get one coz of all the virtual console and stuff" and not like "OMGZZ WII WII HOW LAME WII WII KIDDY".

I just cant wait to e3 to see sum of the games theyve produced...ALOT of companys are interested!

Anyway...end rant

Good discussion yes, but I still disagree with non-gamers shunning it due to the name.

I asked four people today what they first thought of when I said 'wii' to them (I pronounced it 'we', of course), and all of them said something along the lines of "you and me". When one of them asked me why I asked, I explained it all, and then they were struck by the realisation that, yes, it does sound like 'wee'. Note that they realised it after I said the Interweb was in uproar, not due to thinking it themselves. I think the parents, non-gamers etc. will not think of it in a bodily waste term first.

And secondly, does anyone actually use 'wee' in context anyway. I mean, we all know that five year olds say they want to go and wee, but if anything, we say 'take a piss', 'have a leak' etc. You don't see guys in pubs telling their mates they're off to have a wee.

But man i just listened to the ign podcast and listing to poeple say the name in contex , it bring it to a whole new level!!
of retardness and crapness , it's real shize ma god, in a sentence just sound wrong in every sense of the word..

The better make this up with some good games and some other secret that makes it worth wile coz now it's just embarrasing ....

i just realised how retarded this would sound "dude come over my joint and we'll play wii" it just doesn't have the same ring as XBOX or Gamecube or PS2. by far my most fave consol name would have to be the sega Genesis it just sounds sexy.
