UK, March 28, 2007 - Finally the dreams of SEGA and Nintendo fans come true as news hits that Mario and Sonic are set to star side by side in a new game for Wii and DS, based on the 2008 Olympics.

SEGA made the historic announcement this morning and confirmed that Mario & Sonic at the Olympics (as it's known) is due for release this Christmas. The game's currently in development by SEGA Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto is supervising the project. The title will be published by SEGA of America later this year.

Players compete in events around venues based on official locations for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Featuring a supporting cast of recognizable faces from the world of both Sonic and Mario, players can choose from a range of characters including Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, and Tails. More characters will be announced at a future date.

This right here is dream come true for me.

Finally Sonic and Mario in the same game after decade of rivalry.
It's even better that it's not just Sonic either. It's also got Knuckles and Tails, most likely could include, Shadow, Metal Sonic and Amy Rose too.

This is also a chance to help Sonic chances being in brawl.

I'll have more on this later on, I am so excited words can't express how I feel about this. Maybe Sega or possibly Sonic could evtually be exclusive with just Nintendo. After all Sega has had better success on the Nintendo consoles then it his on Sony or Microsoft counterparts.

This could also be a chance to help put Sonic in line for other Mario games too. Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Strikers, and of course one i'm really excited about Super Smash Bros.

Mario works.

It isn't milking it, it is going with what everybody likes. If Nintendo stopped making Mario stuff altogether, I don't think many folks would be happy with Nintendo.

Yeah, don't really care about this game, more excited because it basically confirms Brawl will have Sonic. And maybe Tails as a clone.

they are making an olympics game and chucking in the mario brand to get some money, as they do with their infinity other mario games. WRIGHT isnt saying stop making mario stuff all together, but its getting out of hand.

hey nintendo, been milking mario long?

As opposed to you milking the third person style of speech?

YEAH BECAUSE WRIGHT IS MAKING MONEY DOING THAT, SO CLEARLY HE'S MILKING IT. STFU IDIOT

If you actually read the damn release you'd know that SEGA are the ones making the game.

I'm not talking about making money, I'm pointing out how you've got your basic facts wrong:

they are making an olympics game

Money aside, fanboy reactions like JPWs pretty much make the game a success already. Milking Mario or not, the game will sell, people will enjoy it and at the end of the day mario is just a model in the game, and if that helps sell more copies than some random new character would then good on them. Why take the risk when you could go with what is a sure thing?

I'd love to see Sonic in SSBB, but I don't think his news has confirmed his appearance. I read in an interview somewhere that there were no plans to include Sonic... which is not to say it's not on the cards...but it's hardly confirmation.

IGN: Can you tell us how the collaboration came about?

Mike Hayes: SEGA was awarded the license to produce an official game based on the 2008 Beijing Olympics. When speaking to the International Olympic Committee they made clear that they wanted to reach out to a wider audience - particularly children. So then we looked at the characters we had at SEGA, we decided it would be best to do something with Sonic. After that we started thinking how great it would be to have Mario involved in the game as well, so we approached Nintendo and they thought it was a really good idea too. And that's pretty much how it happened.

Now that SEGA is a publisher, rather than a console maker, it makes it much easier for us to make a historic move such as this. Also under the banner of the Olympics we wanted to emphasise the ethics of co-operation, which are so important to the event, and we thought bringing together past rivals Mario and Sonic was a perfect way to highlight the importance of co-operation. We really want to recreate the spirit of the Olympics in a videogame.

I think seeing Sonic in SSBB is much more likely with this happening.

Anyway, from the sounds of it, this could be the next big hit. Wii Sports + Olympics + Mario + Sonic + Online. A good mix, no?

Here are the full details, and where I got the details for our news article from:

http://www.nintendo.com/newsarticle?articleid=t5eT-QaVMFMIfXI3Z_abfVviRBskksJr&page=

It states clearly that the game will be published by SEGA outside of Japan, and NINTENDO inside of Japan. It also mentions

Quote
Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails and more.

Clear mention of Sonic there, in what is tantamount to the official press-release, so I would say we would see Sonic in the game.

It depends on who is making the game. If it's Sonic Team, we might as well give up hope now. They've driven Sonic into the ground and they haven't produced a stellar title in Jeebuz known how long.

More chance, certainly. Here's another interview from IGN:

IGN: So we won't see Sonic appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

Laurent Fischer: That's not on the cards at the moment.

Mike Hayes: Really, we felt that the Olympics provided a neutral ground for the two stars.

An Olympic game could be all right, but I'm not overly excited at the moment. More information needs to be released.
