Traditionally, it's a half-day. Why? If someone pulls a trick after midday on someone, that person is entitled to retort back and thus the prankster looks the fool.
Something like that. It's a ridiculous explanation, but the day has always been 'till midday' here in Australia for as long as I can remember.

always glad to be a fool. And what kind of a sport would I be if I didn't help you out with april fools day. Then again that's maybe why you got me to do it.
So I could look like a fool. Good job.
Oh well I can always get my revenge next year.
Also I think the myth is with April Fools being only half a day is the fact that if you can't fool anyone by the first half of the day, what are the chances you could fool someone in the second half? You are a fool if you can't do it before midday.

I'd say, if you got someone before midday there would be more of a chance of them getting you back that day compared to doing it later in the day... they've got more time to do it!
