There are a lot of fan boys of every system, and with 3 systems now competing, there is more stupid comments being thrown around with fanboys of each.
Nintendo could do with some follow-up marketing and push, as now is possibly the most important time to cement their already strong position. In most ways though Nintendo is doing very well. They announced I believe a massive profit increase of something like 150%.. see below..
They really should be blitzing the TV, radio, papers, fan websites and others at this point I reckon -- seeing as they have so much money to play with
Developers
will
start developing games for the system, or at least giving it a good go, as they realise the potential install-base they can profit from. If anything, any developer that ignores the Wii is probably shooting themselves in the foot.
Quote
Nintendo's Record Year: 150% Jump in Operating Profit
After raising its forecast several times, the final results are in for Nintendo and they're very, very good. Sales and profit were way up and are expected to climb again in the new fiscal year. The DS fueled Nintendo's growth as 23 million units were sold. The Wii has sold 5.84 million. More within...
As was expected, after Nintendo raised its forecast for the fourth time, the company today has officially announced record results for the fiscal year ended March 31. Revenues were up 90 percent to 966.5 billion yen and operating profit climbed an incredible 150 percent to 226 billion yen—both record highs for Nintendo.
It should come as no surprise that these fantastic results were largely driven by the Nintendo DS handheld. Nintendo had full-year sales of 23 million units of hardware and 123 million of software. Life-to-date the DS install base worldwide has grown to over 40 million.
Also contributing to Nintendo's bottom line has been the strong start for the Wii. Nintendo said that through March 31, the company has sold through 5.84 million units. It was Nintendo's goal to ship 6 million worldwide by the end of its fiscal year. Along with the nearly 6 million Wiis sold, almost 29 million Wii games have been purchased. Nintendo boasted that the Wii has "taken a step toward becoming a cultural phenomenon, appealing widely to both avid and previously disinterested game-playing audiences."
In the new fiscal year (which started April 1), Nintendo is anticipating sales of another 14 million Wiis, which would bring the install base to nearly 20 million by this time in 2008. The company also expects to sell another 55 million Wii games during that time.
Nintendo doesn't really see its DS slowing down anytime soon, either. For the current fiscal year, the company has forecast sales of 22 million more units and 130 million units in DS software sales.
After posting a record year, the company believes it will have an even better year now. Nintendo is forecasting consolidated sales to increase nearly 18 percent to 1.14 trillion yen and operating profits to increase nearly 20 percent to 270 billion yen.

The Wii is a good system, it's just lacking games. A great console without games to play is not going to get played.
Nintendo have had one of the strongest launches of all time with their console, but I can't really comment on the follow up.
There hasn't been any.
Just a steady trickle of b-grade titles. Before the Wii launched, Nintendo said they would release a first party title every three months or so, starting with Zelda at launch, with SSBB, Metroid and Mario following soon after.
Last I heard, all three have been pushed back with only Mario getting a tentative release date.
Of October.
For Japan.
In the meantime, what is there to look forward to? What is there to play?
What pros and cons are you talking about JPW?
The motion controls? Good controls are no good if there's nothing worth playing. The Virtual Console? I've played all of those titles before, and already own most of them in their original cartridge form, I'm not going to pay a premium for stuff I've already own for the novelty of playing it on my "revolutionary" new console.
The online stuff? The Wii is cute, but as far as online functionality goes, it's little more than a third rate throw in at the moment. Nothing on the Wii that I can't do better a meter away on my PC.
Long story short: Need more games, preferably with decent online content.

anybody who buys a console at launch always gets shafted with the selection of games though, for at least 6-12 months? PS3 has nada either really, and all their supposed 'close to launch' titles are way back now as well.
this is really just par for the course, and why I don't buy consoles at launch anymore ..well despite the highest price.

I reckon Nintendo is doing a great job this time round. And they're trying their hardest to get back on track I feel. I reckon the Wii is also an awesome console. And when people call it crap and say it's nothing it gets me all angry because you can't see the bigger picture.
You are the worst kind of fanboy - any negativity of a product you love and you are insantly on the defence. Nobody said the Wii was 'crap', they said they currently aren't impressed by it.
Quote
If you read the reports Nintendo is really getting its spot back in the marketplace. It hasn't crashed and burned like Sega. It saved itself from humiliation and it jumped back in a big way. And I just wish people supported it more.
Huh? People are supporting it, hence Nintendo getting market position back.
Quote
The Wii really is a great console, and really I could complain too, i got plenty to complain about, but the pros outdo the cons right now for me. And they should for you too. And if they don't you made the wrong decision, stop complaining and get rid of the console.
This kind of view is the reason why companies like Sony say this:
"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games"
No, we are not obligated to pat Nintendo on the back even when we aren't fully satisifed with their effort thus far. The Wii is not the face of God. It's ok to criticise it.
The main criticism comes from the lack of games which happens to be the biggest selling point of the console so how can you possibly say the pros outweigh the cons when the biggest 'pro' is in fact a 'con'?
Quote
No matter what you do, for eveyone that agrees someone will disagree. I wish I took that into account. But I am just so sick hearing people complain about the Wii. Get over it!
I wish you did to.

You'd think by now they would have rectified this problem. It has been plaguing the industry for many, many years. We shouldn't have to put up with it simply because it's the norm.

you know what i'm not going to bother with arguing anymore.
I'm just going to play.
Here's the way I look at the Wii.
Motion Sensor Controls. Not one game is played the same as the other, there is always something different to adapt to. That's what I like about the MS controls. I've just bought WarioWare Smooth Moves and I am impressed with all the different ways you can use the Wii-mote. It makes anything look possible, I never thought we reach this stage or I would as a Gamer. The MS controls to me make a game more fun and challenging something which was lacking in the old style, it's now up to you to make the move.
The collection of games. I have about 8 wii games right now. I am almost at the end of Sonic and the Secret Rings(Which I have said over and over again is the best Sonic game I have played in a decade.) Sure the story is corny but who cares it's Sonic. Red Steel is an awesome FPS. Zelda: TP is like any other Zelda game is a legend. (and once I get finish Red Steel, and Sonic I look forward for round 2 of Zelda: TP). Wii Sports is a suprise hit for me, I love this game. And it has quickly moved in as no.11 of my top 50 games of all time. Wii Play, is annoying but it helps me get use to the wii-mote. WarioWare Smooth Moves isn't as bad as it looks or sounds and it helps show the potential of the Wii. Then I have Need for Speed Carbon(brother's game), and World Series of Poker(I only have this because my PC sucks). I also feel some of these games are great when you get the chance of multiplayer.
The Virtual Console. sure I had a NES. But a lot can change in 20 years, and the games that you were crap at one time you find out that really you're not that bad after 2 decades. For example I was really crap at Punch Out! but now I can make it up to 9-0.
Lately I haven't been able to find my NES, so the Wii is a great backfire for that missing passion. Also I never had a SNES. So I get to jump back on and experience what I missed out on. Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda, Starfox, F-zero and Mario Kart, and so forth. I see the Virtual Console as a great part of the console. Because it helps people get back to nature. It helps people understand that Nintendo does have a large library of games and didn't get popular just because it looked good and had Mario. Though I do wish we got more then 2 games a week from Nintendo. Especially when Sega manages to give us 3 when they reckon it's time.
The channels. Okay news got boring after a while. And the Weather isn't that bad. They do quite well with their predictions though. But I love to vote and surf the net, as we have a much better internet channel now. I love to vote however, And it's cool seeing what other people think now and then and seeing which is better and which is more popular everytime. I'm really shocked that people still believe in aliens and people prefer tigers over lions. And that people don't believe in astrology yet they would like to know more about their own future.
That's my way of seeing the Wii.
speaking of the big 3. There's been a few topics going around for Smash Bros. Brawl lately and Kojima was with Sakurai over the week and says that it is near completion. by his standards they could be closer then we think. After all they're probably just on the multiplayer asset. That's why they haven't shown us much of anything else. Multiplayer is the big selling point. But we're suppose to get footage in May it's been said. And most likely another batch at E3.
Other then that I was disappointed with their Ninty's Easter handlings. I was really looking forward to Mario Party 8, and Mortal Kombat Armageddon.
i'm glad they've taken their time with releasing games though. Gives me more time to get around the games I have and finish them 100%.

Typical fanboy stance. If a game gets delayed it's always because the game is getting made better.
Perhaps in this case they will be made better, but the fact is Nintendo said they'd release a first party title every three months (SSB, Metroid, Mario) and they haven't.

To an extent, I agree. Most games are 'different'. However, The Wii isn't THAT much different when you think about it. You still need to press buttons. The only difference is that
some
things are now movement-based instead of analogue-stick wiggling and button pressing. Is this more fun to play? Certainly, but not for extended periods of time. After playing Wii for hours and hours, the movement just feels like second nature, and thus you have a similar feeling as you do when you play with a traditional controller. Is it more immersing? Some games. Wii Sports it is. But I don't think the tilt movement in Excite Truck is more immersing.

You must admit that all the movements are similar though. It's really the only the way you hold the controller that makes it half interesting.

I don't own foggy nostalgia glasses.
Nintendo, thus far, has squandered the VC's opportunity in my view. High prices, limited releases, no demos. I imagine it will become a great resource for classic games at the end of Wii's life, but at the moment it's not for me. Personal preference, always. Whereas you see the current line up good, I find myself disappointed after buying a game and realising it wasn't as good as I remember it to be.

I agree. The news channel is perhaps the most useless feature. There's no regional stories and only about three national stories.
The weather channel interface is nice, but the data is hours out of date and I have noticed that the forecast is usually wrong, not to mention the limited number of cities available.
The Internet channel could be good for flash games.
I do like the Everybody Votes channel though.

Great for you I guess. Not so great for all the people who complain about the lack of games.
(I should point out that all of this post is my opinion only. If I come across as I'm speaking for the majority, I apologise as I'm not)

Oh my god we're supposed to jump around like an idiot whilst playing the wii.
You really don't need to move all that much. Just find your position I go from there.
For Sonic I find it easier to stand up and play. While Zelda, most of the time I could set back in my chair, and just point and stuff. Though I did like to stand in Zelda and use the wii-mote like a real sword. For Red Steel, once again I prefer use of a chair.
I agree with you, hopefully the old style of games will never die, but i'm kind of curious seeing MS is going to be a big thing could the other companies adapt to it for next generation. After all Games did go from cartridges to CD's and DVD's. And controls always got a rumble pak most of the time. And Sony did try to adapt their controls to tilt sensor, which is pretty mucxh a modified version of the wii-mote in my view.
But I don't really give a damn if i'm jumping around like an idiot or not, you may see it that way but I don't. To quote Sony, to me "This is Living". Who cares what it looks like as long as you're having fun and you're in tune that's all that matters.

hey i've calm down. But maybe if I had a few drinks and people started flaming the wii again I might go crazy.
And looking at that post i don't see any anger in me whatsoever. I know what you mean and you probably weren't being serious about jumping round like an idiot, but that that's how a lot of people tend to see it as too.
The Wii-mote is also an improvement mechanism I feel.
In the last few months of playing with the wii-mote.
I have found my co-ordination improve. My reflexes are better. I've lost an extra 5 kilos(though that could be for a number of reasons.)

Wii still has good game...Super Paper Mario. Wii needs Nintendo to hurry the f**k up and localise it.

Unfortunately with Nintendo's attitude on a lot of titles being massively delayed, more and more will resort to this.

I blame region locking.
Pretty much everyone does. There's no reason for it at all in this day and age.
I am seriously considering resorting to other means to get games worth playing. Lord knows Nintendo isn't making it worth my while to sit and wait for them.
