There were a lot of changes made to how the battle system works, the biggest one being that the Special stat was split in to two stats, being Special Attack and Special Defence. There were also new moves, pokémon types, the ability to hold items, the inclusion of berries and situation-specific pokéballs, and all that was only in the shift from Yellow to Gold/Silver. If anything, the thing that has changed the least is the graphics. And the fact that you still use the same interface.

There were different balls in yellow, just not as many. Still, those differences are still really minute when you look at the fact that the gameplay is exactly the same.

There's also the inclusion of a time system that isn't bloated and annoying (ie D/P), a radio and the ability to travel to another continent. On top of that, you get to battle Red.

When I play Pokemon Diamond nowadays one of my biggest problems with it is simply it's speed (or lack there-of). I mean, traveling isn't too slow (so long as you have a few repels handy) but battling is gawd.. It's too slow and unexciting.
The need to somehow make the game's battle system much faster-paced and interesting. Maybe adding additional movement in the animations and speeding up the time it takes to display damage taken, pokemon fainting and on-screen messages ("It was super effective!" Yes, thank you for that, now show me the next pokemon..)

The speed of the battle system isn't helped at all by the scrolling text that you don't necessarily need to read. They should try to summarise or let you get through the text faster. Whenever a pokemon is stunned it's like omfg when the game tells you each turn how excessively paralyzed they are.

Isn't there a text speed setting in the menu screen?

Things like still paralyzed don't need to come up when that information is already given by the status.

So true. Even when you set it to the faster speed it still wastes time, especially when there is pointless text so often.

I hate playing through Ocarina of Time again because of how slowly the text moves. I always set text to "instant" whenever I'm given the option. And I turn battle animations off. Those things are annoying.
