First Harry Potter, now this.  Could this be the new big thing in film?

They mention that they were planning 2 films already - the Hobbit and the bridge between the Hobbit and LOTR.
In this one they're saying that the Hobbit will be turned into 2 parts... which means it'll be another trilogy, unless some terrible mistake has happened and they've misreported it.

Nah, I'm just not that interested in the wacky adventures of Bilbo Baggins. In the final movie I assume there would be more gimli and aragorn. Would they use the same actors?

Yeah they are, all the characters that are returning are supposed to be the originals. People like Legolas (unlucky) are supposed to be making little cameos but nothing huge.

The bridge movie is more about Gandalf than anyone though, I get that impression anyway. I suppose Aragorn and that would no doubt be involved though.

No, I'm fairly certain it was known that they ditched the 'joining film' idea a while back. It's just two films.

This is also what I heard. No trilogy just 2 hobbit films.

This is such a stupid way to think about it. A quick look online shows that the total Lord of the Rings trilogy is around 1200 pages, while the movies total nine hours and a bit hours (558 minutes). That's over two pages a minute. Does that mean that every thirty seconds in the film covered a literal page from the book? No. A lot was cut, while things like action scenes, dialogue and characterisation take more time. There's no way we can know if there's "filler" until it's out. The fact that originally they were going to do a joining film but scrapped the idea to fit in the Hobbit suggests that there was more to the story than they expected.

It was a magic sword wielded by an ancient king and former enemy of the men who became the Nazghul who lived in the Barrow-Downs that the hobbits "explored" with Bombadil. I think. My Ring-lore is a little rusty.

I don't know if the swords were specifically wielded by kings (they each get one, remember) but they are from the old kingdoms of men. Either the Numenor (though I think some of them turned evil) or the Arnor, but it could be the other way around. I dunno there's all sorts of schisms in the books about the ancient ones so it's hard to remember.
