Did anyone else listen to this?

You can download it there. edit: won't let me post links. Search 'Australia Talks, Computer Games'. Otherwise it's on the abc radio website, Radio National, Australia Talks, Past Programs, should be the last one.

I jumped in about 35 minutes through. From what I could tell there was the ordinary mix of 'games will teach your children to rape' and 'I play games all the time and I am fine'. That said, there were some good points, and the main source on the show, Dr Jeffrey Brand I think it was, did a damn good job of being reasonable.

Worth adding your comments to, if you feel like it.

I'm sorta over the rating war now, it's really not going to happen and if it does - it's only going to give parents another skapegoat to blame their sh*tty parenting on.

Can't post the link for some reason, but has anyone read today's news story about the 3 yr old girl who shot herself after thinking a handgun was Wii control ?
That's definitely a major case of sh*tty parenting right there if you ask me and shouldn't have ever been allowed to happen in the first place.  sad

Ah well guess that there's bound to be consequences if,as the mother stated "Cheyenne loved playing on the games console for days at a time." and the stepfather was
stupid enough to leave a loaded gun lying on a table. Not blaming the Wii here, but very negligent nonetheless imo.
Only in America I suppose. :/

There is absolutely no way that is video games' fault.

They clearly have no way of knowing whether the child thought it was a wii remote anyway. It's much more likely the child was simply fascinated with it because children love playing with shiny things.

Either way it's pretty terrible what happened. I don't really care what mistakes were made, but I imagine what those parents are going through right now is absolutely terrible. I wouldn't like to be there when my child shot itself in the stomach.

They showed a picture on Kotaku, it was a black handgun attachment which, yeah, was the shape of a handgun, and the actual gun was the same colour (black) and similar shape.

Does a "handgun attachment" even exist in Aus?  Hmm, wonder why not?

"I have a 3 yr daughter who loves video games, I'll buy her a gun attachment - hmmmm, it looks identical to MY gun - guess I better leave it on the coffee table *LOADED* so over time they begin to notice the subtle differences when the real thing and the fake"

I mean the parents are obviously going to be upset and lookin for someone to blame - but give them a month or two, if they're still blaming the Wii - child services should be given a call. It's a disgrace a 3 yr old was able to get her hands on a gun, let alone a loaded one with no safety on, good god - what a sh*t father.
