It's like an indie game which turns out isn't even in beta yet. But all over my twitter, tweeps are tweeting about it. And the Penny Arcade guys... and lots of the fancy game journos and that.
Anyway, took the plunge, works out to be like 15 AUD and you get free lifetime access and all add ons and free too. Some people have made some cool stuff with it
Eg: shizz like this:

I am so a believer now. This game is awesome.
It's still in alpha so there's no tutorial but I watched a quick youtube tutorial and have been peeking through the wiki a bit and it's falling into place.
So, basically the game works in night and day cycles, and it's all about creations and sculpting and... mining.
You start out with nothing. You can 'mine' (hit, basically) those trees and dirt and rocks which all turn into raw materials. Wood, dirt and stone respectively. You can then craft those materials into new items. So wood turns into planks. With planks you can make a work bench, or sticks. With the workbench you get a bigger crafting space, where you can make tools. It's on a 3 by 3 grid - and by arranging items in a shape like the tool, you can make a tool. So two sticks with a stone on top makes a shovel, and if you add a stone either side it makes a pick. You can make swords, axes, etc.
So, when the sun goes down, monsters come out. They spawn anywhere it's dark. Which is pretty much everywhere. So, you have to make a little cave, fill it with torches, and block up the entrance. You can spend the nights making your cave bigger, eventually craft and smelt ore and other things you've mined etc etc. When the sun comes up you're free to explore more, get better materials, expand your cave, plant torches wherever you want.
The real cool parts are the caves. If you find a good cave, it just keeps going and going and going and going. As you get lower there are rarer materials and more bad guys. You can lay torches everywhere so they won't spawn again, come back again later and mine more.
Really there just seems to be a lot of great things in the game. I've found underground waterfalls, massive natural structures which are super cool. Once you expand and put torches everywhere the bad guys aren't such an immediate threat at night so you can spend more time building. There's lava and stuff at the bottom of the caves - and sometimes you'll hit on a spring and you'll flood the lava and cool it, opening new areas. It's all randomly generated, and I'm pretty sure it goes on forever. There's no boundaries, so it just generates and saves things as you explore further.
It's realllyyyy coool and addictive. Keen to check out multiplayer.

Yeah you gotta stay away from the cheats.
The game is going swimmingly for me... 2 of my friends have it, so I've set up a server we start each night. Built some awesome . I'll get some pics soon.

I've never played multiplayer and have a bunch of friends that have it. Might set up a server some time. Does multiplayer run smoothly? E.g like hosting the server, my max upload speed is like 8kbps for some reason, would it be fine?

Yeah it runs pretty well. It takes all of 5 minutes to get running so it can't hurt to try in your case.
Not sure about the upload speed. I'm running ADSL2 and there's been no hiccups at all.
Basically:
You download the server program.
Open a few ports (I got stuck on this for 2 days, turns out I was changing the wrong options on my router. Woops.)
You start the server,
Connect with your IPv4 address and then give everyone else your normal IP and you're set.
There are some features missing, and some things work a bit funny, but I think that Notch is fixing them all with the next update (halloween, October 31st).
- Health doesn't work, so you're invincible.
- Mob health doesn't work, so animals and zombies are invincible - but they do disappear after its been daytime for a while. Also the green explodey guys explode, and can kill other monsters.
- Most of the resources work fine, torches aren't getting consumed when I put them on trees - the leafy parts. So I've just lit up every tree around and it's not used any torches.
- Using water buckets doesn't quite work, but you can spawn a 'spring' item if you're a moderator on the server. Does the same thing.
- Doors and stairs can bug out, and smelting doesn't always work - sometimes the items in there just disappear. That said, I've turned the server off and on again and they reappear.
Might sound like a lot - but it's entirely playable and good fun with more than one person. You get stuff done a lot quicker. And it's cool to all be building seperate things next to each other, or helping out with one project. Once health is implemented, I think it'll get a lot better.
The next update looks slick though. Tougher bad guys, new worlds, fast travel etc etc.

This game is addictive, I just spent 1300 on a new computer and I am still playing this more than any of the newer games I bought. Clay sucks though, not enough clay.

I've been playing for weeks and I've not found any clay.
I'm playing right now, actually.
I've got a server with like 3 of my friends, and just build to our heart's content. One of my favourite games everrrrrrr.

Yeah whenever I need clay I go on huge multi hour searches, the trick is finding a sand dune biome with a river running through it also use a texture pack that changes clay to red.

Ah yeah okay. I get scared of losing my way if I walk too far
I'm raging right now, 'cause I've built this thing we've named 'skyhook' 'cause it kinda looks like... well, the skyhook from Shadows of the Empire.
Basically it's a tower that goes straight up, and has 4 bridges coming off it, each with one of our houses. I've built like a massive floating bit of land with a mountain on top, but it turns out mine starts just over a sort of desert biome. So all my grass is sh*tty and brown. Everyone elses are on sweet forests. Lameeeeeee.

Thats what compasses are for
. Yeah my map is pretty old so I have to go ages before I see a biome so I have to use the nether to go find snow. Minecraft makes me rage as well, the first time I built a diamond pick I pressed q and chucked it in lava. I keep thinking q is change weapon.

I second that, this online game is certainly addictive! I haven't really ever stopped playing it! Although it's probably time to try out something new...

I think it's sort of like Survivor meets Harvest Moon. I love mining things.
If you go on youtube, there is a tonne of videos made by different people. Some of them are super funny.
