An anonymous source has informed GameSpot AU that GAME will be closed effective this weekend around Australia as a buyer has not been found.

This brings to an end a sad chapter in Australian gaming retail history, as game sales move towards both online stores and digital products.

GAME Australia entered the market at the start of the current generation of gaming and never really took off or became a company of their own, relying heavily on their UK parent company to hold their hand every step of the way.

The price of games shot up to $119.95RRP while GAME Australia was growing and hovered above the $100 mark for quite some time, showing that more competition does not always necessarily mean better prices. The move to online shopping has caused a huge shift in the way gamers shop, and unfortunately bricks and mortar stores don't seem to be able to find a way to compete, even with their own online stores.

GAME Australia spent a lengthy amount of time gaining 'signatures' for a petition for R18+ ratings of games, which never came to fruition. A legacy now left in the dust of a broken company.

GAME Australia failed in $120 million of debt.

Sliced Comments: Friendly reminder, don't buy anything from their website as you probably won't get it but they probably will charge you!!
