PS2 Porting Problems - Gamecube, PS2

7th February 2005, 4:51pm
In the latest issue of CG World (the Japanese magazine), Capcom was interviewed regarding the port of survival horror game Resident Evil 4 to the PS2. You may recall a while ago when Capcom was subject to nasty comments along the lines of "Die Capcom, Die". That was because Capcom retracted its exclusivity deal with Nintendo to keep RE4 on its system, and revealed a PS2 launch in early 2006 - a year later. Well, things aren't going as smoothly as they may have hoped. They are having problems with the memory size of the system.
  • Interesting fact #1: Leon, the protagonist of the game, was built of over 10 000 polygons in the Gamecube version.
  • Interesting fact #2: The PS2 can only render 5 000 polygons.
  • Interesting fact #3: The PS2 can render more textures at once than the Gamecube, but Capcom has commented that there must be a balance between the number of textures and the quality of each one.

So, if they do manage to get RE4 ready to go for PS2, you can expect a much simpler and blockier-looking version than the GC build, which has been praised by some critics as the best looking game on the GC, and by others as the best of the entire generation. Wow. You can preorder the game from Games Warehouse through here.
