Cell Chip Details
8th February 2005, 9:45pm
IBM, Sony and Toshiba at the Solid State Circuits Conference disclosed details about their multi-core architectural design microprocessor code-named Cell that will push performance greater than 4GHz.
The Cell on show, integrated 234 million transistors, fabricated with 90 nanometer SOI technology. Featuring a multi-core architecture and ultra high-speed communications capabilities real time response should increase 10 times the performance of the latest PC processors. The Cell chip is able to support multiple operating systems such as conventional operating systems (including Linux), real-time operating systems for computer entertainment and consumer electronics applications as well as guest operating systems simultaneously.
Production of the Cell is expected to begin at IBM's wafer fabrication facility in East Fishkill followed by Sony Group's Nagasaki Fab this year. The Cell has a wide practical application that will see the group promote Cell-based products including digital televisions to home servers to supercomputers.
PS3 is sounding like it could be a powerful beast. We will just have to wait and see whether the hype is true.
