Square Enix revealed a while back that Nintendo's double-screened system will be home to a Final Fantasy game. That was quite an understatement. In a press conference today in Japan, Square Enix clarified and elaborated on their FF DS plans.

Ok, so FF 1&2 are available already for the GBA, while FF IV is on its way to the system. Final Fantasy III was announced for the DS a while ago, but today a trailer was revealed, showing that it wasn't just a translation error. Suprisingly/excitingly, it showcased full 3D visuals for the game.

The game's producer, Hiromichi Tanaka (Final Fantasy XI) explained the reasoning behind the game. He said that Square Enix had thrown the idea of remaking the game around for years, but the project had always been rife with problems, like lack of resources. Since the visuals are so dramatically different, he added, staff from the original are supervising the development. Ryosuke Aiba is the art director (he worked on FF XI, while Akihiko Yoshida (FF XII) is a character designer.

After the release of Final Fantasy IV to the GBA, the handheld with be hit with FF V and FF VI too. Woo! The other title we know is heading to the DS is Crystal Chronicles, a sequel to the slightly disappointing Gamecube game.
