Interactive Entertainment on the Rise
3rd November 2005, 9:57pm
According to GFK, the boom in Interactive Entertainment in Australia over the last 3 years has been significant. From 2001 to 2004, the sector has grown by 50%, and in 2004 generated $787m in sales. The unit growth has been just as impressive, with 12.8m units sold in 2004, up more than 65% on 2001. The trend has continued in the first half of 2005 - value growth is +5% and unit growth is +12% when compared to the same period last year.February 2005 saw the launch of the Nintendo DS, which sold more units in its first week than any other console in Australia. The console market as a whole has increased the number of units sold, but the value generated has declined when compared to H1 2004. This is due partly to the introduction of the DS into the Australian market, which had a recommended retail price of $199, but of greater consequence was the change in average price of the PS2, down 19% for only a 1% increase in units.
Console games dominated the first half of 2005 showing positive growth in both units and value and accounting for 55% of the industry’s value.
