Masahiro Sakurai left HAL Labs to pursue an independent game designer position, but he's returned to help them out in the latest Super Smash Bros. title. He's serving as the director and game designer for the Revolution, Wi-Fi Connection-compatible title.

Sakurai is best known for his work with Super Smash Bros. , but he's also been a part of the Kirby team, and recently worked on Meteos for the DS with Q Entertainment. This announcement was a surprise, to say the least, sicne he left HAL nearly two years ago. Even then, though, Satoru Iwata (Nintendo president) hinted that he might be consulted in the future.

At E3 this year, Iwata invited him up to his hotel room and said to him: "We'd like you to be involved in the production of the new Smash Bros., if possible near the level of director." Sakurai was very interested by the controller when it was revealed, and this should prove exciting to any fighting fan.
