Last month, Lucent Technologies filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, alleging that they infringed on a patent for the decoding of MPEG-2 video in their Xbox 360 machines. If Lucent won the case, they could ask for an injuction to prevent the sale of the system. This is actually the second time the two companies have met in battle. They actually accused Microsoft of breaching the technology earlier on, but a judge ruled in favour of Microsoft due to a typo in the patent document. Lucent has since fixed the patent, and is re-filing the suit. The company has not asked for a preliminary injuction (i.e. to stop Xbox 360 sales now), but it seems likely they will request it when it comes to trial. We'll keep you posted.
