During Nintendo's press conference this morning (as in, very early morning), Nintendo revealed an interesting aspect to the Wii. Satoru Iwata described at length how game loading times were getting longer and longer, and how he loved that with the DS he could close the lid midgame and pick it up instantly later.

This philosophy has continued on to the Wii. Nintendo introduced 'Wii Connect 24', which basically means that your system is never off. It accesses the Internet even when on standby, so feasibly you could be asleep while people browse your Animal Crossing town and leave presents. It also allows developers to insert a level here, an item there as they please, ready for when you next switch it on.

In hindsight, the way the first trailer for the Wii ended - by pressing the off button on the remote - suggests that we could perhaps turn the system on and off as quickly as the DS. It did seem to be a focus point of Iwata's. Stay tuned if more develops.
