2nd June 2006, 9:49pm

Best Original Game went to Spore, which also picked up Best PC Game. The Best Console Game was Gears of War, despite being up against tough competition from Assassin's Creed on PS3, Bioshock on PC and 360, and Super Mario Galaxy on Wii.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass landed the title of Best Handheld Game, against Killzone, LocoRoco and MGS for PSP, and Elite Beat Agents on the DS. The Wii took out the Best Hardware award, with the PS3, 360 Headset, DS Lite and Logitech Racing Wheel also in the running.
Gears of War was lauded as the Best Action Game, while Assassin's Creed was the Best Action/Adventure title on the show floor. The most well-crafted fighter on display was Heavenly Sword, and the Best RPG prize was handed to Mass Effect. Excite Truck cruised in to first place, nabbing the Best Racing Game title from underneath the noses of Gran Turismo HD, MotoGP 06, Formula One 06 and Test Drive Unlimited.
The Best Simulation Game was rightfully handed to Spore, while the Best Sports Game was Wii Sports. Strategy lovers should keep an eye on Supreme Commander, while music buffs should tune in to Guitar Hero 2 for their Best Puzzle/Trivia/Parlour Game fix. Finally, the Best Online Multiplayer Game was Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
