Nintendo has come out and said that they won't be taking much of a loss on the sales of the Wii. Microsoft and Sony both take losses on their hardware (Sony has announced an estimated 100 billion yen loss on the PS3 - US$884 million), but aim to regain the money through software. Nintendo has never lost money on a system sale, according to Satoru Iwata (president of the company), and they plan to keep it that way.

'We can't promise we won't have even a one-yen loss, but we are not expecting an enormous loss,' Iwata said at a recent press conference. 'It is a strange notion that a game console always leads to mounting losses in the beginning...We are working to make the Wii business a healthy one from the first year.'

Of course, the reason why the Wii is so inexpensive to produce is because it isn't a beast of a machine.
