A patent discovered online suggests you might see messenger functionality in your Wii games. The patent was filed in January, but only published online today. It focuses on communication through a home console, but handheld gaming systems are also briefly mentioned.

The buddy list (including games your friends are playing) was mentioned, with communication being through keyboard or voice chat (cough Wiimote microphone cough). All the typical remove/block functions we come to expect from a messenger program are included.

The key feature is that gamers taking part in different activities - one on the VC, one online with Animal Crossing, one in the hub, say - could all still communicate. Personal profiles, stats, avatars and more are all available. Each Wii console can also house more than one user.

Don't take it as set in stone, but with the WiiConnect24 and an obvious push into the online marketplace, it's both likely and exciting.
