He recently discussed how Sony could drop from first place to last in this next generation of consoles, and now David Cole of DFC Intelligence has followed up the report with a note that Sony is 'handing its competitors a golden opportunity.' Remember, last time he criticised the company for the PS3's price, saying that it is targeted towards elite consumers, most of whom are not those that bought the PS2.

It should be noted that Cole never questioned the value of the system in a dedicated high definition home theater, simply the number of buyers that fall into that price range. He said that while the 360 could finish first overall, it would have to do so with limited support in Europe and very minimal support in Japan.

Apparently, if Nintendo takes advantage of the battle between the 360 and PS3, and keeps their system at an affordable price point, they have the best chance of gaining ground.

'The company with the biggest opportunity is Nintendo,' he says. 'With a market leading price and a compelling mass market message the Wii has the opportunity to be the market share leader in all major regions.' DFC's reports are based on best case and worst case scenarios. Notably, Nintendo's worst case scenario still sees them with a greater user base tahn the Gamecube. Nintendo's struggle against a kiddy image is not as important, Cole believes, as Microsoft making itself seem less hardcore.

'By letting Sony and Microsoft split the hard-core teenage/twenty something video game marketplace, the Wii could end up number one in market share for the next generation,' he finishes.
