Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive shown - Xbox 360
9th August 2006, 1:29pm

The drive is an external drive which will allow Xbox 360 users to experience true HD-DVD movies through their 360 at proper HDTV resolution. The Xbox 360's current drive is a standard DVD drive, only up-scaling to 720p and 1080i modes to play standard DVD discs, with a loss in quality. The HD-DVD addon is rather large - about 3/4 the size of the 360 itself.
Sliced Comments: It will be a while before the HD-DVD format takes off, and there will be a while until discs become more readily available. There will also be strong competition from the Blu-Ray camp. Microsoft's strategy of an external HD-DVD drive is not a silly one, as obviously they could equally offer a Blu-Ray drive if this turned out to be a more successful format in the market-place.
