Confirmed: PAL PS3 Capabilities Limited - PS3
26th February 2007, 8:34pm
Sony has today confirmed the earlier report that the PAL version of the PS3 would be manufactured under different specifications. The specific change comes in the removal of the the 'emotion engine' chip, which is used by the US and Japan models as the PS2 CPU. As such, PS2 compatibility will be reduced to emulation, rather than a dedicated hardware route.
This change limits the amount of PS2 titles that will work on the new machine. Sony is expected to release a list of compatible titles when the console launches.
Michael Ephraim of Sony Australia spoke to GameSpot and had this to say: "Clearly costs is one of the [reasons]. If software is cheaper than the cost of the chip, then why not do that?"
