Sony Discontinues Budget PS3 - PS3

12th April 2007, 12:32pm

While many of us here would welcome the release of the budget PS3, it seems that Sony does not agree, with the news that it is now discontinuing the 20GB version of the PS3 in the US.

Speaking to next-gen.biz, Sony PR boss, Dave Karraker, has cited "consumer and retail demand" as the reason for the move.

"This is based purely on consumer and retailer demand, which favored the 60GB model 10 to 1," he said. "[This] supports the notion that consumers are willing to pay more for advanced technology in a gaming console."

Not missing the chance to take a dig at their competitors, Karraker confirmed that current 20GB PS3 owners would still be "100% supported with software and services, since all PS3s have the same basic architecture (unlike if MSFT were to stop selling their Core system, which would allow publishers to actually use their hard drive for gaming purposes, leaving the Core user out in the cold)".

This news seems to also have confirmed the fact that the 20GB PS3 will probably never reach our shores any time soon, or at all.
