GfK today announced their recorded quarter 2 hardware sales figures for 2007, showing the Playstation 3 being the strongest contender in the current generation of gaming in Australia.

The Playstation 3 sold 27,645 consoles in the second quarter of 2007 with the Nintendo Wii following closely behind with 26,676 consoles sold. The Xbox 360 is coming in last, but still selling well with 21,440 consoles sold considering the 360 games market has kept relatively quiet over the past three months.

Across other platforms of gaming, the Playstation 2 is still selling strong with 45,962 consoles sold. The Nintendo DS is still selling through the roof with a staggering 74,435 units sold, and the PSP coming in last overall with 20,068 units sold.

These figures however still show that the console market is very healthy in Australia, and with the big games due out between now and Christmas, we expect console sales to increase for Q3.

It's also worth noting that in the handheld market, the Nintendo DS has sold 589,873 units while the PSP has sold 288,757 units since launch. This figure shows the PSP market is actually about 49-50% of the Nintendo DS market - basically, for every PSP sold in Australia, two Nintendo DSs have been sold. Meanwhile, the N-Gage sits comfortably in 3rd place with just 32 sales since launch.

Sliced Note: N-Gage sales may not be 100% accurate.
