DSi Gets Australian Release Date Too!
DS

That's a surprise. I certainly didn't expect to hear so soon about the details of the Australian release of the Nintendo DSi. Nintendo Australia, following up on its American counterpart, has announced that the DSi will hit Australian shelves on April 2, 2009 for AUD$299.95 or roughly NZ$375.00 in either black or white.
Nintendo did reveal that the Nintendo DSi Browser would be available as a free download at launch, so you can hop online from the get-go. They also announced that Wii Points have been renamed Nintendo Points, and that you can use them on either system. Software will be one of four prices: free, 200 points ($3.00), 500 points ($7.50) or 800 points ($12). Other new features include the 17% larger LCD screens, colour PictoChat, a calendar with a memo function, new firmware and more.
You can check out more at Nintendo Australia's official DSi website. For our money, we'll be waiting three days and then importing the gorgeous blue one from America for $35 less, assuming that the exchange rate still stays at 65c to the US dollar. If it improves, there's even more reason to import. Only if the dollar dropped to 57c would the prices equate.

Definitely too expensive, you can get one of the new PSPs for that price. I wonder what the sales figures will be like.

That won't stop them selling better though.

Probably not, but Nintendo's cheapskate tactics are really starting to get on my nerves. I mean, the Wii hasn't had a price drop since it was released, and it was overpriced then... Oh well, it's good business I guess. It's an interesting contrast to MS and Sony who are constantly trying to get their price down as low as possible though.
Although importing may seem to be the cheapest option, I'm not sure it is the best..
Didn't they say the DSi was region-locked?
It plays DS games from any region, but DSi-only software is region locked. You can't access any other region's online DS Shop. And anyway, it's probably cheaper to import those DSi games anyway.
You can't import something you download though. When they say DSi software, they mean the stuff on the DSi shop, not the game carts.
I think there are DSi games that will be released on carts that make use of the cameras etc.?
I expect that there will be new games that have the option of using the camera (like with the Playstation Eye), yes. They'll still be playable on a DS Lite or Phat though, just without the added functionality. Of course, if a game were released that had gameplay based on use of the camera, then it would only be playable on the DSi, but they would also be limiting their audience a lot.
I want it
I just don't want to buy it.
QFT.

Too expensive for me, would consider 6 months ago with the exchange rate and if I didn't have a lite.
P.S. Admeister, Wii wasn't overpriced at launch. Might be considered such now though.
Nintendo were making a significant profit on every Wii sold when the console launched. If that's not overpriced, I don't know what is. I expect they could sell it for $250 and still be pretty comfortable. It's just a beefed up GCN with motion controls after all... Wii profit article.

If you take out the words "beefed up" you may have a more accurate sentence there![]()

So because it's making a profit it's automatically overpriced?
Nintendo have always been smart in how they price their consoles and what profit they make on them. As a rule they're better at making a sturdy console that won't cost them as much as the other companies. Gamecube was a prime example of this.
It's overpriced when the general concensus says that's overpriced, when the demand isn't as high as it could be because it's overpriced.
When the Wii came out, I was perfectly happy about how much I payed for it. When I got my 360 I felt I was paying slightly too much for the thing, and I felt like I was being robbed by the PS3. So there.
The PS3 is overpriced because it isn't worth that much entertainment-wise. Obviously, since they aren't selling as well as the other consoles on the market (except the PSP, but that's hardly an endorsement). The Wii is not overpriced because Nintendo make a profit. That's just smart business and good design.
I'm mostly talking about how much they could/should be selling the console for, in relation to how much they are selling it for. From that perspective, it's way overpriced, and I don't like it. Price cuts are usually a standard part of a product's lifecycle, I think the only reason Nintendo have been able to get away with such a high price is because the other two consoles were more expensive at the time. After that, they've been lucky that the console is so popular, and that people can live with the price as a result. As far as value for money goes though, it's terrible. Napoleon, your personal valuation of the console is irrelevant, from a technical stance when looking at how much it costs to produce the console compared to how much it is being sold for, it is overpriced. The same goes for the DS of course, it started off at $200, and has stayed that way ever since. Now Nintendo intend to get away with selling the DSi for $100 more than that. Popularity can make people blind to bad value.
Of course, if your personal value of the console is high you'll be more comfortable with paying whatever price they're asking, but that doesn't mean you couldn't/shouldn't be getting a better deal. Unfortunately, Nintendo give us no choice, and with every year that passes, it gets more and more ridiculous.
That said, good business is good business of course, if your product is selling well at a certain price, why change it. I just think we should be getting a better deal instead of somewhat blindly handing over our money. We're being blatantly ripped off, and we don't seem to care.
I think you've got it backwards. Whether you deem it overpriced is entirely related to the value you expect to get from it. A business's production costs vs retail price is irrelevant. It's stupid to argue that Nintendo should decrease it because they aren't selling it at cost. The only reason you want it cheaper is because you perceive its value to be less than its price. It's entirely subjective.

Sorry but you are wrong if it is selling well or even out at its current price it is not overpriced. It will only be overpriced if it stops selling this well. What it can do is irrelevant. The only thing that is relevent is what people are willing to pay for it.
They should be selling it for the most that people are willing to pay for it. It doesn't matter that you don't think it is worth that much when clearly the people who are buying it do.
