Next Nintendo Console Likely To Support 3D
Wii, 3DS

And you thought there'd be no talk of the Wii's successor at this year's E3! Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper spoke to CEO Satoru Iwata about the Nintendo 3DS, and as part of their discussion asked whether they would be bringing the technology to the Wii.
"If you display a 3D image, the image quality [on Wii] becomes extremely bad, so we'd probably do it with the next system," Iwata replied. "We're thinking that the timing should be once the 3D television adoption rate crosses the 30% mark."
Nintendo's newfound interest in the technology is not just about the wow factor. As mentioned in the Nintendo press conference, 3D makes it easier to position yourself in the environment - to hit that floating block. As always, they want to make gaming as universal and barrier-free as possible, and 3D helps in that regard.
So, does that mean a 3D, HD, motion-capable Wii successor is on its way in a few years? It would have to be at least 2012 by the time 3D televisions gained that sort of market traction, which would be about six years after Wii debuted.

If the wii was HD I'd assume the first party titles would look differently.
Let's just say you won't be playing pirated games or even homebrew on your PS3 any time soon.
Especially since they killed 'Install Other OS'.
do you think hd or hi res textures for the games like zelda skyward sword or paper mario will enhance the game any? they use the cartoony graphics to both the games and the wii's advantage - all higher res does for those games is get rid of jaggies.
i suppose if you're not into first party content though, it would be a boon.
I thought they said the Wii replacement was "years away"![]()
They do need to work more on the games library though, I agree HD is not going to improve things.. although playing the Wii does feel like you're stepping back in time if you are used to playing the PS3 and 360 all the time, which is hard to get over at times.
I remember there was a guy who "hacked" the PS3, but only in a pretty basic way. Let's just say you won't be playing pirated games or even homebrew on your PS3 any time soon.
i honestly thought the ps3 was cracked ages ago - i stand corrected if thats the case.
That's true, but the only console that continued to have games released for it after 2006 was the PS2. A lot of great games were released in that time.
Last gen was pretty good all up - you could be spoilt on any console I thought. I started out with the PS2 and for a long time that was my main console, then the Gamecube took over and eventually I came to the Xbox pretty late and had great fun on that too. Systems physical imperfections aside, they all had a great selection.
different tastes i guess. halo 1 was cool. mechassault, rallysport, fable, jade empire, forza, project gotham, splinter cell (timed exclusive), amped, the list goes on.
twas, i had all 3 and used xbox the most, ps2 the least.
Why would you do this?
The Xbox was awful. The PS2 was incredible.

I can't help but feel like you'd still be put off by the motion control even if it was in HD, but it's an impossible argument anyway. Though Gamecube was more powerful than PS2?
ya ps3 was only just recently cracked, just before the slim was released. Nick, if zelda and mario were HD im sure i would have a different opinion. n64 was the last gen of nintendo i have appreciated. since then, their technology has fallen behind significantly.
if its so easy to mod, why was it the last one of the next gen console to actually BE modded?
I don't believe the PS3 has been modded.
'Cause it was made by a bunch of savant monkey's so no goddamn human can figure out how it works. Including developers...

as to the games - there are many awesome games on the console - every nextgen console has its fair share of shovelware - seems like because the wii was categorised as for the casual gamer, many devs developed many shizer "casual" games for all the consoles expecting to make much moolah.
also, why would having a hd wii mean a lower install base? both the 360 and the ps3 connect to hd-less tv's. also, the res does not make the games? you would have gotten the same games and strategy from nintendo - just at hd def
I was specifically asking Dave. It would have been nice to be HD, sure, but I was asking Dave whether that really would have changed anything for him.
The graphics on the Wii are fine. It's not like it matters anyway, since graphics don't make the game. The problem with the Wii was that it was so cheap and its gimmick was so appealing to old people that shovelware just drowned out any possibility of the Wii getting a strong library. Consumers soon realised that the games on the Wii just weren't very good, which sort of ruined any chance decent developers had of getting their game picked up.
It's also pretty easy to mod, so piracy is a bit of an issue as well.
So I guess if MC and admeister are saying they would have preferred the Wii to be HD because it would have meant a lower install base and thus less shovelware and thus a greater chance of the Wii having a stronger library, then I agree. Otherwise, no.
It's interesting to think about. We may very well see an HD 3D-enabled Wii in a couple of years, I'm sure Nintendo would be able to do it easily when given an extra eight years of development time.
fixed
The Wii should have been HD.
i'd prefer then to work on something like kinetic/natal than 3d though.
i dont give a fudge about 3d. >
That's essentially what they did with the DS and Wii, I believe Iwata said it was a testing ground for new control types - and it worked!
Really, I think they could sell almost any handheld without trouble, as long as it has pokemon and all that on there.
the 3ds could be the proof of concept - get it working on the small screen, then scale up
