There were a lot of miffed gamers in Australia in July, with the announcement that the eagerly awaited Fallout 3 was to be "RC" (refused classification) under our games rating system.

However, finally some great news - the game has been re-classified, and now will be released as MA15+. You can read the updated release over at the Australian Classification Board. No exact confirmation on whether anything has been removed, or whether the game may have just been looked at differently. Some are guessing that the real drug names have simply been renamed to fictional ones.

Sliced Comments: Looks like many that had already become frustrated, and have ordered copies from overseas, may be cancelling their orders.

Yeah, me too. At least they didn't restructure the whole drug use thing, just gave fictional names for them.

the reasoning they gave for the inconsistency between movies and games were that movies were not interactive, where as games are.  but im pretty sure showing exactly how some guy shoots up heroin in a movie is alot better than showing a simulated action in a video game

I agree - seeing someone excuted in cold blood in a movie is just as disturbing as seeing it happen in a game. I think we still need to watch what games allow people to do, but its totally over the top to think that just cos a game gives people access to the ability to run people down in a car, or shoot someone in the head that the player is going to run out and do it.

I personally can't stand fallout, found it boring and lame, but I'm glad to see that its being released regardless of my view, simply because I think it's a joke australia misses out on a loved game just because some lame, do-gooder politician who's never gamed in his/her life decides so.

How comes the movies get away with shit like Ratatouille but if video games have animals in the kitchen it gets lambasted as "promoting poor hygiene" and banned?

Bloody double standards...

Nah, I reckon it is even minor things such as that, I've seen/heard the comments, and much of it is something nobody would take any notice of in another medium. But because it's a video game they go bananas.

To them, the mere mention of drug use is "bad', never mind movies such as Trainspotting which were very popular at the movies which featured people shooting up all over the place and being totally out of it. Plus several movies feature rape scenes (in a negative light, but rape nevertheless), but if a video game ever tried.. no chance.

the thing is, they tend to focus on the extreme - 'watching something vile' to them means stuff like bestiality and rape, it DOESNT mean injecting yourself with stimpacks for health which would be just above the 'what? this deserves an R rating' bar

They don't care about the classification too much.. On the the ABC's "Talk Back" program I think it was, it has been mentioned a few times, but the pollies tend to shake it off, with comments such as "why would anybody want to watch anything so vile?!", which generally is a safe road for them to take. Never mind that movies, and some TV programs are equally bad, or worse with sex scenes or whatever. Two different standards.

Unfortunately movies have had freedom for a lot longer, but in the early days there was the same opposition we see now to video games, so it's just a waiting game. Maybe in 10 years time all the oldies will be dead and things will change.

apparently they are opening the public forum about the R rating soon so that we, as the public of australia can share our arguments for the rating.  this was heard on ABC's good game last night though.

I predict a lot of religious, moderately retarded radicals to be there, in addition to completely uninformed idiots... Unfortunately the government already seems to be a part of the later so I'd be interested to see if the public forum changes anything, unless everyone there is arguing for the R rating.

stupid classification board - give us an R rating now you plebs!

That reminds me - I gave the government my details when they requested them following my email in the lead up to the national vote on creating an 'R' classification, but never heard anything back from them.

...*resists urge*...*fails*...

Plebs are the lowly poeple, the lower classes. Calling the people in charge plebs because they don't give you what you want is ironic.

That's ironic in the true sense of the word, not in the Alanis Morriset sense of the word, which isn't.

"According to the OFLC, the incentives and rewards for their use have been "removed"."

i sighed a little and then decided on the import.

I am thinking that will be the way to go.

It's okay, I'll be buying The Witcher Enhanced just before hand so I'll still have something to play, and get both games for the price of your one.

Pfft, Play Asia will continue to do me fine, thankyouverymuch. Mainly to avoid the wallet rape that comes with the $x2 Australian Tax.
