Nintendo has announced its intention to release upgraded versions of Nintendo Gamecube games for the Wii under a new 'Play On Wii' brand ('Wii de Asobu' in Japan). The first title to see a release will be Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, and will launch in Japan on December 11th this year. Two weeks later, on Christmas Day, Pikmin will be released.

Following in 2009 will be Chibi-Robo!, Pikmin 2, Mario Power Tennis, Metroid Prime, and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The games will be adapted to work with the Wii control scheme, but it doesn't sound like there will be any graphical enhancements. Still, playing the first two Metroid Prime titles with Metroid Prime 3-style controls is something to get excited over, and the budget price of 3800 yen ($AUD52) is nice, even if it's more likely to be AUD$79.95 down here.

N-Europe is reporting that the games will be seeing a European release, which makes it extremely likely that they'll be hitting Australian shores too. And hell, even if they don't, you can play the European games on our Wii systems because they are both in the PAL format.

So what do you think about this move? Is it a clever way to appease the hardcore that have been vocally clamouring for a deeper gaming experience on the system? Or is it a lazy way to earn a few more bucks on some old titles instead of investing the time and money into making some ground-up Wii products? Would you buy one rather than hunting down a Gamecube memory card and game off of eBay? Sound off in the comments below.

Yeah, I wouldn't say any of those was epic (Metroid Prime comes fairly close though).

We differ in opinion then, which is fine, I just wouldn't rate any of those games as epic. Warcraft, Crusader, C&C, CoD, Half-Life etc are my epic titles.

Mario 1,3,world
Star Fox
Mario 64
A link to the past
Mario Galaxy
All three metroid prime games
Wind Waker/TP

I would call these all epic. As for awesome games I would include pikmin 1/2, MK, wii sports and probably MM. Luigis mansion was also awesome if short. So was advance wars, fire emblem all the wario land games.

He only asked for one.

Heh, the sad thing is that it's pretty true. Nintendo end up getting a lot more credit than they deserve in the end.

Ya, 1 game 10 years ago. *clap*

Well if you put together the number of awesome games made exclusively by console creators, you'd end up with one damn short list.

I can't think of one title I'd say was epic, any suggestions?

That's a third party game.

It was second party when it was made.

Well, I'm not sure if you'd classify Golden Eye as "combat" (probably shooter is more accurate) but it was done quite well.

Um, hello, smash bros.?

Those are second party games (Brawl is technically third party).

I stand by admeister's comment.

Well, Nintendo have never been known for their great combat games after all. Mario jumping on enemies is about as complex as it gets.

Wind Waker with some waggle would be nice, but what would be even nicer is Wind Waker with a difficulty level that means you can actually die. Game was too damn easy.

All 3D zelda games are.

I found Orarina of Time pretty pressing, not combat wise, just working out where to go and how to do all the dungeons =\

You were probably quite a bit younger but I think he meant combat wise.

oh i see. i thought they were downloads for some reason.
Posted by insanopointless 08/10/2008 8:20pm
Maybe, but that's a completely different box of cookies.

Straight emulations and digital distribution.

These are wii-makes in a way - at least with Wii controls. I don't think that would be the easiest bit of engineering to do, not to mention the fact that it will all be packaged and sent to brick and mortar stores.

Closest comparison I can think of is Warhawk - $100+ in a box, $50 online. Same thing with Steam - it tends to have games a lot cheaper, since it's a straight download.

how much are xbox originals?? like $25 or something?
Posted by insanopointless 08/10/2008 6:07pm
We'll probably get them for about double that; 60, 64 maybe. Not saying they're worth that much now, but it's rare for games to ever come out cheap these days (few exceptions) and cheap usually means 60. Unless it's crap, which case it's less.

lol - Cube games should be free, that consoles was such a black dot in the history of the industry =p

There were plenty of awesome games on the GC.

Agreed. They were mostly first party games, but they were awesome.

That's for sure, but they're definitely not worth $53 any more. $30 would be pretty fair though.

I think it's a good idea to re-release the games. It means that people who never owned a gamecube but bought a Wii can have a better variety.

I don't really think this will appease "hardcore" gamers though as they're just old games made compatible on Wii. Only huge fans of the games are going to get excited and chances are the other hardcore gamers would have played them already if they really wanted to. This is something more for the younger players, and gamers who are starting to get into gaming more and want to try quality games ().

I also agree with the price thing. That's not budget. They should be $30. If they come out here at $79.95 isn't that supposed to be the retail of the 1st party NEW Wii games? If they're that expensive most people won't bother unless they've exhausted all the new Wii games and want something to play.

In other randomness: I hate that there seems to only be "hardcore" and "casual" gamer labels when they're used to generalise WAY too many different gamers. I should invent more labels and try to get people to adopt them.

I wouldn't call $52 a budget price for those games...

I am actually looking forward to this. I never finished pikmin 2 and the two metriods will be awesome. I wish they came together though.
