The Great Escape Review - PC

The crossover from movie to videogame hasn't been a success for many; it would seem that the only real benefactor from the transition was Goldeneye on Nintendo 64 which to this day is still one of the best games to be ever made let alone the best movie-videogame cross done to date. So with the bad record of movie-videogames it would be a wise idea to pick a movie with a good storyline, a movie that is popular and possibly even an Oscar nomination. Enter 'The Great Escape' the 1963 film staring Steve McQueen in this WW2 film about prisoners of war and the adventure of escaping from 'escape proof' prisoner of war camps in Germany. So with such a strong storyline is 'The Great Escape' capable of escaping the bad bind that so many movie-videogames collect as they exploit the success of the big screen films?

Gameplay

I don?t think anyone could imagine what it must feel like having to abandon your aircraft over enemy grounds whilst your dropping down looking over your shoulder and seeing all your pals in there planes flying away while your awaited by a small contingent of German soldiers ready to pounce and ship you off to the nearest POW camp. This is how The Great Escape starts, your starting point in the plane as a pilot and you are having trouble with the German fighter planes making ground and attacking you with great force. Your rear gunner is killed and you must make the trip to the back of the airplane and use the gun to fight off German resistance. You're successful in making the Germans retreat but your plane has taken too much damage and you have to make an exit or fall to your death inside the aircraft.

You've undertaken the role of ?McDonald?, a British pilot who's captured and taken to the German prisoner of war camp called 'Dulag Luft' where you meet and greet the other prisoners of war who allow you into there secret society in plotting the escape root to freedom. Your given objectives to do for different characters you meet inside the prison and it all links to you getting in with the escape master minds, for example finding a shovel for the tunnel digger or finding a German pass for your own benefit.

Inside the POW camps there are two types of German soldat. The 'Goons' are the guards that are in charge of the security of the camp, there not that bright. However the 'Ferrets' are special anti-escape offers who search and detect suspicious behavior. The guards AI is different off course between the two model soldiers with the 'Ferrets' being a smarter version while the 'Goons' are more like the rent-a-cop version of German soldat, don't be surprised to find the odd one asleep on the job.

Having friends inside the POW camp proves to be an enormous help to you and your escape plans. They can create diversions for you to work (continued next page)
