7 Introduction
Another year, another game in the NHL franchise. EA's NHL series has been one of the longest-running series on consoles, stretching right back to the early 90's. While Ice Hockey does not have a large following here in temperate Australia, it is quite popular in the frostier parts of the US, Nordic Europe, Canada, and Russia during winter. Recently we reviewed Tiger Woods 09, and found the attention to detail, and passion for the game really showed. This time we take a look at NHL09 and see if it can do the same.
Gameplay
Like all other EA Sports titles, there are a wealth of game modes to keep players busy, capturing every aspect of the sport. From simple shot practise, to single matches, through to the management of full tournaments, pretty much everything is on offer here.
One of the major new features is the NHL Pro feature. This allows you to start as a rookie in the AHL minor leagues, gradually upgrading your different skills and making it to the NHL major league. Your coach will give you advice and set various tasks which need to be met to be able to advance to the next level. Scores and stats on different aspects of your game are also measured as you complete each match. While the other modes are mainly a team experience, in Pro mode you take the role of just one player, and the AI controls the other players in your team. If you show enough promise, you'll receive invitations to join other teams, and eventually the NHL. While Ice Hockey is a team sport, the Pro mode really works well in giving you an individual perspective on the entire experience. Many players will welcome the new angle it gives to the game.
Play Now, now obligatory to EA Sports titles, allows you to skip all the complexity, and get straight into a game against a random team. It is a good way to get right into the game straight away without wading through mountains of options.
Dynasty Mode allows you to play as both coach, player, and manager in your goal in taking your team to the very top of the league. Here you play match by match, having to deal with player injuries, salary caps, rosters, drafts, and building strategies for you all-conquering team. After you complete each game, you advance to the next game on the league calender, which you can either opt to play yourself, or let the computer simulate the entire match based on your stats. You play through an entire season, hopefully taking your team right to the top. It can take a long time to complete, but for those that want the entire NHL experience, it's one they can pursue over weeks or even months, giving great longevity for hardcore fans.
Create a Play allows you to create your own strategies and plays that can be executed during (continued next page)
