Over the years, Nintendo's tinkered with the Mario Kart franchise to keep things fresh from game to game. Double Dash!! had two players per kart, the Wii version introduced bikes, and the DS version split the action between two screens. Now the 3DS game is going to take you off-road - properly off-road.

The new trailer, available for download below, shows karts paragliding through the air and propelled like miniature submarines underwater. The mix of flight and item usage should make for an exciting new twist on the racing genre. It's almost like Diddy Kong Racing in that respect. I hope that you can glide at any time, like pulling off a stunt, rather than only in specific places. That way, there's more opportunity for good players to maximise their lap times with clever shortcuts.

Also new this time around are customisable vehicles, which is sure to add another level of depth. Plus, coins are making a return, with each one you collect on the track adding to your speed. This feature hasn't been seen since the GBA's Mario Kart Super Circuit in 2001, and was introduced way back in 1993's Super Mario Kart for SNES. See it all here in the trailer, and check out the screenshots and artwork for more.
